A Call for Protect Krabi, Thailand …….

Protect Krabi from Destructive Coal Plant and Coal Seaport Project

Krabi, our “Emerald of Andaman” is under threat from a 870 Mega-Watts
coal plant and coal seaport project proposed by the Electricity
Generating Authority of Thailand(EGAT). Natural beauty and abundance
of marine natural resources of Krabi that has been critical for
sustaining local livelihood and economic well-being of Thailand will
be destroyed if the proposed coal development projects succeed.

For people of Krabi, we are born and raised here, coal plant is
ultimately a disaster that will change Krabi forever. For travelers
both in the country and around the world, this ecotourism paradise
will be tainted with 200 meter tall smoke-stack once scaling up to top
of cliff at Railay beach, coal transshipment will pass by one of the
best diving site along Andaman seacoast. The lesson we have learnt
like dirty coal plant at Mae Moh, coal plant pollution has a serious
impact on health : every year, it causes exacerbated asthma, heart
problems, hospital visits, days when people miss work and school, and
worst of all, premature death–especially among vulnerable populations
like children, the elderly and people with asthma.

Coal seaport project will be built in Krabi river estuary that has
been well recognized as wetland of international importance. Krabi
river estuary supports a high diversity of wildlife. Its mudflat forms
one of the most important sites for migratory birds in southern
Thailand with a total of 221 bird species having been recorded at the
area. Of migrant bird species, 23 are shorebirds which feed here
during their annual migrations between North Asia, Southeast Asia and
Australasia. We have dugong – our little sea mammal friends that live
their live in the second biggest seagrass bed of Thailand around
Siboya island. Last but not least, we also have a 45 million years
shell fossil cemetery, one of the world’s three oldest known shell
fossil sites, here in Krabi.

Coal plant and coal seaport project will destroy the livelihood of
communities and people in Krabi. Who will make a trip to Krabi if the
pristine destination is disappearing. This is what we are standing up
for to fight dirty coal.

We, Protect Krabi Network, can not quit coal without you. We invite
you to protect our beloved Krabi – the emerald of Andaman- by signing
the petition to demand EGAT and the energy policy makers to stop this
destructive coal plant and coal seaport project.
